Situated in the very centre of Ireland, Athlone is a major crossing point of the river Shannon as it makes its way south. The town has a population of under 7,500 people in a condensed area. Many people miss Athlone when they take the by pass and thus miss the fantastic setting on the Shannon and the fascinating historic centre. |

The first bridge to be constructed in Athlone was built in 1120 by Toirdhealbhach O Conchobhair, roughly 100m south of where the current bridge stands. The bridge was replaced in 1210 by a stone bridge which was situated beside the castle. This bridge wasn’t replaced until 1567. Athlone Castle was built in 1210 on the site of a wooden castle which dates back to 1129. The castle is a focal point for tourists visiting Athlone today. |

One of the great sights in Athlone is the river Shannon as it runs through the town. The water of the Shannon is dark due to its origins in a bog, but clean and sea through. There is a real atmosphere here during the summer as boats moor along the walls of the river. |
