Belfast: An Introduction

Belfast is both the largest city in Northern Ireland and the capital of Northern Ireland. Situated in County Antrim, the city is the second most populated city in the whole land of Ireland with a total of just under 580,000 people living in the greater areas. The city sits on Belfast Lough which is a natural inlet which has aided the long association with Belfast and the shipping industry. While Belfast was in the middle of the Northern Ireland troubles, since the Good Friday Agreement (Good Friday 1998) the city has gone through a renaissance.

The site that Belfast now sits on has had a history of settlement in the area going back to the Bronze Age and remainders of old Iron Age hill forts can still be seen in the area. During the 17th Century the city boomed as a centre of economy and industry. Since the inception of Northern Ireland in 1921 after the Anglo - Irish agreement, (an agreement that sent the Republic of Ireland into civil war) Belfast has been the capital of Northern Ireland.

Today if you want to drive to Belfast or Northern Ireland from any area of the country, you will only know you have passed over the border by a subtle change in the road signs and road markings. Before the 1998 agreement, the border passing would have been noted by border patrols and soldiers.

There are many points of interest worth seeing in Belfast. City Hall is situated in the centre of the city and around which everything is located. At Christmas time there is a ice skating rink erected. Among the other points of interest are Queen’s University and Linenhall Library.
