The Book of Kells

Dating from circa AD800, The book of Kells is a illustrated manuscript which was produced by Celtic monks. It is one of the finest examples of an illustrated manuscript dating back from the mediaeval ages. In total the book contains four gospels of the Bible with each page being incredibly intricately ornately decorated. Visitors to Dublin can enjoy the book of Kells as it sits permanently in Trinity College Dublin with a page being turned every day.

It is believed that the Book of Kells was created on the Island of Iona, just off the western coast of Scotland. During a Viking raid the book was taken to Kells in County Meath where it was completed in the Abbey of Kells.

The Book of Kells was presented to Trinity College Dublin during the seventeenth Century by Archbishop Ussher. The book has been on display in Trinity since the 19th Century and is housed in the Old Library.

While the original author and creator of the Book of Kells is a matter of debate, there is no doubt about the importance of the book. By tradition the book is thought to be the creation of St. Columcille but modern knowledge recognises the scripts found in the book did not develop until after the death of St. Columcille. Without doubt the Book of Kells is a work of art from the Hiberno Saxon style.
