Dingle: An Introduction

Located on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Dingle is one of the most picturesque towns in Ireland. The Dingle Peninsula is a gealteach area in that it is a Irish speaking area. The town itself is situated on a natural harbour which adds to the natural beauty of the area. Behind the town are mountains which provide a stunning backdrop to the town.

One of the biggest attractions in Dingle is Fungi the dolphin who lives at the mouth of the harbour. Without fail he shows up for the tour boats who ferry passengers out to see him multiple times daily for the last 15 years. Fungi is a bottlenosed dolphin who now enjoys celebrity status in Ireland.

Situated off the west coast of the Dingle Peninsula are the Blasket Islands. The name comes from ‘brasker’ which is a Norse word which translates to ‘a dangerous place.’ The islands were inhabited until 1953 when the death of a child who should have lived took place. The islands were unreachable by the doctor because of bad conditions, a fact which made the people living there realise that it was time to abandon the island. Boats take tourists out to the Great Blasket Island from Dingle Harbour.

If you are going to be visiting the south west of Ireland, Dingle is a must see place. The character and atmosphere of this town provides a reminder to all of what a traditional Irish town is. There is ample accommodation and camping sites around and it is well worth the visit.
