Located in County Donegal in the north west of Ireland, Donegal Town is situated at the mouth of Donegal Bay and is overlooked by the Bluestack Mountains. While many people wrongly presume that Donegal is the capital of County Donegal because of the similar names but Leterkenny is actually the capital. |

Settlement in the area of Donegal town dates back to prehistoric times with remains such as round forts and other earth works dating to this period. In the town itself is Donegal castle which dates back the 15th Century. After the Flight of the Earls in 1607 the castle was presented to Captain Basil Brooke as part of the plantation of Ulster. Captain Brooke carried out major work on the castle and also was responsible for laying out the current town plan. |

Donegal Town is a major port of call for tourists and is an ideal base from which to explore the rest of the County. There are many fine beaches located near the town with excellent surfing conditions. This is an ideal base for both hill walking in the nearby Bluestack Mountains or for golf as there are many quality golf courses in the surround area. |
