Enniskillen - An Introduction

Situated in County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland, Enniskillen is the economic and local district centre of the County. Enniskillen has a population of just over 13,500 people according to the 2001 census which makes it by far the most populous town in County Fermanagh. The town itself is situated between the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne.

One of the major draws of visitors to the town during the summer months is the fact the town sits on the Shannon / Erne Waterway which joins both Lower and Upper Lough Erne with the River Shannon. Boats can be docked very close to the city centre. Without doubt the Shannon / Erne waterway is one of the most beautiful sections of Irish countryside.

While the whole Northern Ireland region is now enjoying an extended period of peace, the history of Enniskillen can not be touched upon without reference to the IRA bomb that exploded in 1987 with the loss of 11 civilian lives. It is widely accepted that the disgusting waste of human life was a turning point in the troubles in Northern Ireland.

There are lots of reasons to visit Enniskillen. Apart from excellent river and lake boating, Enniskillen Town Centre offers excellent shopping, restaurants and pubs and with its young student population, always has a relaxed party atmosphere.
