Galway: An Introduction

Situated in County Galway in the west of Ireland, Galway is a city of character and atmosphere that has become famous for its historic setting, Irish culture and pub culture. Many people visit Galway from all over Ireland to enjoy its legendary nightlife.

Galway is often called ‘The City of the Tribes’ due to the fact that fourteen merchant families (tribes) led the city during the Hiberno-Norman period of history. The merchant families were loyal to the King of England. Their uncertain reaction to the siege of Galway by Cromwellian forces earned them this label, which they subsequently adopted in defiance

There are many activities you can take part in while staying in Galway. There are a number of great golf courses, among which is the Galway Golf Club which is a 18 hole course located in Salthill which provides excellent views of Galway Bay. There is also excellent mountain walking in the area along with water sports and angling. Children visiting Galway are well catered for with facilities such as bowling, go karting and Atlantaquaria. If you are seeing Galway City up close, there are a number of walks around the city that can be taken.

Eyre Square is both the centre of Galway and the hearth and soul of Galway. It was Mayor Edward Eyre who presented the plot of land to the city in 1710. The square has recently been redeveloped into a more modern attraction that befits the ongoing development of Galway.

Galway is a modern city with a young population set in a very unique setting. The city has something to offer everybody, and it is a must see when you visit Ireland.
