Grafton Street

Situated on the south side of the River Liffey, Grafton Street is beyond compare when it comes to shopping in Dublin. The street is pedestrian only for much of its length which stretches from St Stephen’s Green to College Green. There is a slight gradient uphill as you walk towards St Stephen’s Green with shops of all description on either side.

Grafton Street is so named after the first Duke of Grafton who was in possession of the land on which Grafton Street now stands. The street grew from a simple country lane to its current status as one of the premier shopping streets in Europe when it was developed by the Dawson family in 1708. The street was made pedestrian only during the 1980s and since then the street has gone from strength to strength.

While you walk up Grafton Street, the street is lined on each side by major shops such as Mark & Spencer, Brown Thomas, HMV and Weirs along with many more. There are a number of streets off Grafton Street which offer other shops, restaurants and bars. At the very top of Grafton Street is the St Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre which is unique due to its architecture. From the outside it resembles a river boat and inside it is bright and airy.
