Named after its creator, Arthur Guinness, Guinness is a dry stout that has been brewed since 1759. Although Guinness is an Irish drink and is most associated with Ireland, it is currently owned by the British brewers Diageo. Diageo is the largest international beer, wine and spirits company in the world today. Along with Guinness Diageo also handles Smirnoff and a host of other popular drinks. |

Like most quality beers Guinness is made from four basic ingredients, water, barley malt, hops and yeast. The difference between Guinness and other beers is that a portion of the barley is steamed and then rolled. This is what is responsible for giving the beer its dark colour. The water used is taken from a well in the Wicklow Mountains. |

Arthur Guinness began brewing in Liexlip before moving to St James Gate Brewery in Dublin City. Arthur signed a 9,000 year long lease and pays £45 annually for the space. When you are travelling through parts of Dublin, you will get the smell of the hops from the brewery. |

Guinness is famous for its television adverts and also its double pour method. The topic of the perfect pint is often discussed in pubs and you can be assured that the Irish are very fussy about their Guinness. In one particular advert, we were told that it takes 120.5 seconds to pour the perfect pint of Guinness. |
