Kilkenny: An Introduction

Situated in South Leinster, Kilkenny town is one of the most significant heritage towns in Ireland. While the city itself has a population of just over 8,500 people, the surrounding areas bring this population up to over 20,000 people. Kilkenny is the smallest city in Ireland both in terms of population and area. Kilkenny is a historic city and the streets are laid out as they were built and there is a great sense of history as you walk these streets.

Kilkenny Castle which dominated the centre of the city was the seat of the Butler family in Ireland. The castle is over 30m tall and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and expanses. The castle was burned down in 1175 and was not rebuilt until 1192. During the 19th Century the castle was sold to the Irish Government for £50 and since then has been open to the public. Every year an opera is held in front of Kilkenny castle.

Among the other attractions in Kilkenny are Dunmore Cave, Kells Augustinian Priory, Kells Mills, Kikieran and Jerpoint Abbey. Kilkenny also has much to offer in terms of crafts with original handmade crafts being produced here. Among the many items you can purchase are jewellery, pottery, glass, ceramics and textiles.

Kilkenny is a unique city and one that should be considered when you are setting out your itinerary for visiting Ireland.
