Limerick: An Introduction

Situated in the south west of Ireland in the province of Munster, Limerick is a historic city that sits on the river Shannon. The city dates back to a Viking settlement in 812 although there is considerable evidence of earlier settlements. Limerick sits in an ideal situation as regards using it as a base to see other parts of the west of Ireland and the beautiful surrounding countryside and lakes.

Limerick is an interesting city to visit in terms of architecture. The area can be divided into two distinctive categories, traditional architecture which dates back to English architecture, and the modern architecture. In places the integration between the two are more successful than others. One of the great aspects of the city is the fact that the river Shannon bisects it and it is a real pleasure to sit outside a bar and watch life go by for a few hours.

Sport in Limerick is both a passion and a way of life. The city is home to the Munster Rugby Union team who have enjoyed massive success in European rugby recently. Among the other sporting codes played in Limerick are Gaelic games and soccer.

Overall Limerick is a city well worth visiting. There is plenty on offer for the whole family be it sightseeing, shopping or any other activity.
