Ireland’s premier cultural institution, the National Museum of Ireland prides itself on placing strong emphasis on Ireland’s material culture, art and natural history. Because the Museum collections and the exhibitions located within each collection are available at four different sites —three in Dublin, and one in County Mayo— you may find that in order to view everything, you will want to hire a car to drive to take in each exhibit. |

The effort is well worth the reward, as the contents of each of the four museum buildings is well worth whatever minor inconveniences hiring a car may present. |

The National Museum of Ireland consists of four different buildings, and which one you begin with depends entirely on what you want to see when visiting the museum. If your field of interest is Archaeology and History, then you will want to stop in to the building on Kildare Street. |

Not only do the exhibits pay tribute to Ireland’s extensive archaeological finds and current sites that examine history as far back as several thousand years, but the building is also the sit of the original home of the Dublin Museum of Science and Art (opened in 1890) which makes it a sort of archaeological treasure until itself. |

The Decorative Arts and History department of the National Museum of Ireland is found at Collins Barracks in Benburb Street. This opened quite recently in 1997, and it also serves as the administrative headquarters for the whole National Museum of Ireland. |

The Natural History section of the National Museum of Ireland can be found in Merrion Street which is situated close to the Malone Car Hire Dublin City Center location, and originally belonged to the Royal Dublin Society. This has in fact been opened to the public since 1857, making it the longest-opened of all the four sites. |

The newest of the four is the first to be located outside of Dublin. This is the National Museum of Ireland Country Life building, which can be found in Turlough Park, Castlebar, County Mayo. It opened in 2001, but is no less important or exciting than the other three, and if you have the time, all four are well worth a visit. |
