The River Shannon

The river Shannon is the longest river in Ireland and probably the best river in Europe for cruising. The river is a natural boundary between the west of Ireland and the rest of the country. The river is notable for both its beauty and the several lakes that it runs through as it makes its course southwards before eventually entering the Atlantic Ocean though Limerick and the River Shannon Estuary.

In total the river is 259km long, and stretches from the Cuilcagh Mountains in County Fermanagh. The River Shannon Estuary adds a future 113km to this length as it passes through 11 of the 32 counties that make up the island of Ireland. Among the most notable tributaries to the river are the River Suck and the River Brosna.

While the River Shannon is generally regarded as the home of water sports in Ireland, it is also home to the river cruising in Ireland. Boats can be rented from several locations on the river from north of Enniskillen to Portumna at the top of Lough Derg. Upgrades to the locks along the river alongside the construction of extra docking spaces have helped develop a minority activity to a very popular hobby.

Navigation of the river is simple with extensive maps and a simple navigation system. Among the main towns on the Shannon are Enniskillen, Carrick on Shannon, Lanesboro, Ballinasloe, Boyle, Athlone, Banagher, Portumna and Killaloe.
