The Rock of Cashel

Located at Cashel in County Tipperary, The Rock of Cashel is one of the most stunning sights in Ireland. If you are travelling between Dublin and Cork you will get a great vantage point as you approach the town of Cashel which is situated at the foot of the castle. The name Cashel is adapted from the Irish word Caiseal which roughly translates into fortress.

Simply put the castle is overwhelming because of its position on top of a rock and the size of the complex. Adding to the mystique and legend of the castle is the fact that this is the place that St Patrick used a shamrock to explain the holy trinity.

There are many highlights to the Rock of Cashel, among which is the round tower which stands 28 meters tall and dates back to the 12th Century. Cormac’s Chapel which was completed in 1134 is a great example of Irish Romanesque architecture. The Cathedral which was built in 1270 is built in cruciform plan with a central tower.

The Rock of Cashel is open from 9am daily and entrance into the complex is e4.40. Cashel is a picturesque town and is an ideal place to stop for lunch and views of the castle behind the modern and characteristic buildings provides a magnificent backdrop.
