Sligo: An Introduction

Situated in the north west of Ireland between Lough Gill and the Atlantic Ocean, Sligo is one of the largest towns in Ireland with a population of just under 18,000 people. There is a campaign at the moment to incorporate Sligo as a City and in terms of Connaught; Sligo is only second in size to Galway.

Sligo is derived from the Gaelic for ‘the place of shells’ because of the huge amounts of shellfish in the river Garavogue which flows through the centre of Sligo. Sligo is a medieval city; however the only medieval building left standing in Sligo is the Dominican Abbey. Between 1847 and 1851 over 30,000 people emigrated through the Port of Sligo to escape famine in Ireland.

Sligo has a reputation for being a great place to enjoy yourself with many restaurants, pubs and nightclubs on offer. There are 48 pubs in Sligo, one for every 375 people in Sligo. There is a wide selection of restaurants and foods from all over the world, from Indian to Chinese and traditional Irish. There are five nightclubs in Sligo with Toff’s Nightclub being the most popular.

Although Sligo is situated in the north west of Ireland, Sligo is easily accessible by buss, train, car hire and by air.
