Toll roads in Ireland have been in existence since the mid 1980s when the East Link was opened. The East Link provided a new bridge over the Liffey that would bring traffic away from the city center. In 1990 the West Link was opened to cross the River Liffey over the Strawberry Beds by motorway. This is by far the most controversial toll road in Ireland. In 2004 a toll was opened on the M4 between Kinnegad, Enfield and Kilcock. The final toll road to be opened to date was opened in 2005 on the M1.
