While many tourists are put off visiting Northern Ireland by its troubled past, significant political progress over the past decade means that it is now a safe and enjoyable place to travel. The Good Friday Agreement and the IRA’s decommissioning of its weapons have been major steps in the path to peace in the six counties of Northern Ireland. |

If you visit the North from the Republic of Ireland, you will have to cross the border. Controls at border checkpoints are now much less stringent than before and in most cases you can simply drive through without any formalities. |

However, it is important to remember that the British pound is the currency in Northern Ireland. Some businesses near the border may accept Euros, but you will need to change some money to pounds soon after you arrive |

Northern Ireland, like the Republic, has some amazing scenery and points of interest. Perhaps the North’s most famous sight is the Giant’s Causeway, where huge basalt columns lead out into the sea towards Scotland giving the impression of a man-made path. If you like walking or hiking, you should check out the Glens of Antrim and Glenariff Forest Park. Here, beautiful valleys and wooded hills stretch inland from the Antrim coast, providing some beautiful scenery. |

If you enjoy city life, the North’s two main cities, Belfast and Derry, offer some interesting attractions, friendly people and good nightlife. In Belfast you can visit the shipyard where the Titanic was built or visit the Opera House. Meanwhile, many visit Derry to walk the Derry walls that survived the Siege of Derry in 1658. |
