Waterford: An Introduction

Waterford City is the capital of County Waterford, a county that borders with the Atlantic Ocean on the South coast of Ireland. In terms of size, Waterford City is the first largest city in Ireland with a population of just over 45,000 people. The city still retains much of the medieval character today.

Historically speaking, Waterford was Ireland’s first city and dates back to 914 AD when it was founded by the Vikings. The initial settlement in the area first took place in 853 AD, but the settlement was captured by Irish locals until the Vikings regained control in 914 AD. During the Middle Ages the city enjoyed massive prosperity and was favoured by King Henry VII who gave Waterford its motto: Urbs Intacta Manet Waterfordia (Waterford remains the untaken city).

Apart from being the economic, cultural and centre of government in County Waterford, the city is also a centre of education with the Waterford Institute of Technology providing excellent third level education. Among the most famous industries in Waterford is Waterford Crystal which has a worldwide reputation for excellence in glass making.
