Wexford: An Introduction

Situated in the south east corner of Ireland, Wexford sits on the south side of Wexford Harbour which is also the estuary for the river Slaney. The whole area of County Wexford is a major draw for Irish people, many of whom spend several weekends each year in the area. Wexford is the area of Ireland with the best weather and is nicknamed the “Sunny South East.”

Wexford was founded by the Vikings in 800AD and named the area Waes Fjord. In 1169 the Normans invaded the city at the request of the King of Leinster, an invasion which led to the English colonisation of the area. During the Middle Ages Wexford was an Old English settlement that used an old English dialect known as Yola, a settlement that continued up until the 19th Century. Wexford was the centre of the 1798 rebellion which saw the United Irishmen which were influenced by the ideals from France and America rise up against the English rulers.

While Wexford town is a port city, the port isn’t that successful due to constantly changing conditions in the sands that lie under the water. Today the port is only used by leisure craft and fishing vessels. During the early 20th Century another port was built 20km south of the old port at Rosslare Harbour, a natural deep water harbour that wasn’t influenced by tides or currents. Today Rosslare Harbour is known as Rosslare Europort and handles both ferry and freight ships that travel between the United Kingdom (Fishguard, Pembroke Dock) and France (Cherbourg and Roscoff).

There are many activities in Wexford that will entertain the whole family. Whether you fancy some top quality fishing or want to feel some adrenalin while quad biking or anything in between, Wexford has it all.
