Cork Airport

Cork International Airport is one of three international airports in Ireland (Shannon International & Dublin International). Cork Airport is situated on the south side of Cork City and has two runways (17/35) and (07/25). The airport mainly handles flights to European destinations and in 2005 carried over 2.7 million people safely to their destination, making it the second busiest airport in the Republic of Ireland.

The main service providers at Cork Airport are Aer Lingus and Aer Arann when aircraft movements are counted, but in terms of capacity, Aer Lingus and Ryanair are the busiest carriers. Among the other operators who fly to Cork Airport are BMI Baby, British Airways, Centralwings, Czech Airlines, easyJet, Jet2.com and Malev Hungarian Airlines.

The building in principal of Cork Airport was agreed in 1957 and the airport officially opened in 1959 at a cost of £1million to the government. During the first year, the airport handled well over 10,000 passengers which in today terms would be judged as a quiet day. The numbers continued to grow and extensions were made to the airport and in 1992 Phase III of the terminal expansion programme was completed. The only hindrance to the operation of the airport is occasional bad weather which can dip below the requirements for a Cat II landing.
