The building in principal of Cork Airport was agreed in 1957 and the airport officially opened in 1959 at a cost of £1million to the government. During the first year, the airport handled well over 10,000 passengers which in today terms would be judged as a quiet day. The numbers continued to grow and extensions were made to the airport and in 1992 Phase III of the terminal expansion programme was completed. The only hindrance to the operation of the airport is occasional bad weather which can dip below the requirements for a Cat II landing. |
