Roy Keane

Roy Keane is the most famous son of Cork. Keane was born on August 10 1971 and went on to become a world class footballer and won many honours in England playing for Manchester United. Although he is now retired, Keane is considered to be one of the best central midfielders to play the game. He began playing football for Rockmount before moving Cobh Ramblers in 1989 before being signed by Nottingham Forest.

Keane was signed by Nottingham Forest for a sum of £20,000 and very quickly started to impress people with his considerable array of talents. During the 1991 season Keane came to prominence and made himself a automatic pick in the centre of the park. Unfortunately Nottingham Forest was relegated in 1991 despite reaching the semi final of the FA Cup. During the summer of 1991 he was transferred to Manchester United for a then record fee of £3.75 million.

As soon as Keane signed for Manchester Utd he was a first team player and partnered Paul Ince in the midfield. After Eric Cantona retired in 1997, Roy Keane became the captain of Manchester Utd, a role he held until he left the club in 2005 to sign for Celtic. Keane’s trophy haul at Manchester Utd is impressive by any standards: 7 premiership titles (1994, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003) 4 FA Cups: (1994, 1996, 1999, 2004) and the European Champions League in 1999, a season that saw Manchester win the Premiership, the FA Cup and the European Champions League.

Keane signed for Celtic in December 2005 after his relationship with United had gone sour. Keane demanded perfection from his team and publicly dismissed the talents of his team mates. Keane won the 2006 Scottish Premier League despite not finishing the season due to a hip injury that had dogged his final years as a professional footballer.

While many people will remember Keane for his role in the Saipan Incident during which he walked out on the Irish team just before the 2002 Japan South Korea World Cup was just about to start. It was an argument that divided the country. Keane did return to International Football two years after the incident.
