Ennis: An Introduction

Situated in County Clare, Ennis is 32 kilometres North West of Limerick and 25 kilometres from Shannon Airport. The town is home to just under 19,000 people, many of whom work in Limerick and Shannon Airport. Ennis sites on the banks of the River Fergus and it was on a river island in this river that A Franciscan monastery was founded in 1247. Ennis subsequently developed into an important market town, a role it still performs today.

The name ‘Ennis’ is adapted from ‘Inis Cluain Ramh Fhada’ which means ‘Long Rowing Meadow Island’. It was in Ennis that Daniel O’Connell was elected to the British Parliament in 1828 and today this fact is commemorated by the O’Connell Monument in the town centre. The election of O’Connell marked the first time that an Irish Catholic got elected to the British Parliament. O’Connell is famous in Ireland for his peaceful protests against British rule in Ireland.

Ennis is ideally situated between the cities of Galway and Limerick on the N18. Ennis is also connected to Limerick by railway, although if you  wanted to travel to Galway from Ennis you would have to go the long way round (Ennis, Limerick Junction, Portarlington, Galway).

There are many things to do and see in Ennis, and most important among them is to walk along the narrow streets of this historical town. Ennis has many top quality pubs and restaurant like Knox's Bar & Bistro in Abbey Street, and is also the gateway to the Clare and the Burren which is famous for its karst landscape.
