Sport in Cork

  
 

There are three main sporting codes in County Cork, Gaelic Games (Hurling & Gaelic Football), Soccer and Rugby. County Cork has also enjoyed recent success in the field of athletics with Sonia O’Sullivan. Sport is without doubt every important to the people of Cork, and those that thrive at sport become heroes.

  
 

In recent times Cork has enjoyed success at Gaelic Games with Cork winning the All-Ireland Hurling Championship in both 2004 and 2005. During 2006 Cork have reached the final where they will have to play Kilkenny in what will probably be an epic battle. In the Gaelic Games Senior Football Championship Cork are in the quarter finals after beating Donegal by one point.

   
 

Soccer in Cork has a big tradition. The most famous Cork soccer export was Roy Keane who one multiple Premiership Titles while playing for Manchester United. Cork City FC are the biggest team in County Cork. Cork City play at Turners Cross and are defending champions after winning the 2005 Eircom Premier League. The other national league team in County Cork is Cobh Ramblers who play in the first division.

   
 

Ruby Union has a strong tradition in County Cork with Cork Constitution being the biggest club. Cork Con as they are known play in Ballintemple and have been crowned the All Ireland League Champions in their history. Munster Rugby has been a major success story on the European Rugby scene. In 2006 Munster won the Heineken Cup, the biggest European victory in the clubs history. Among the other sports played in Cork are basketball, golf, hockey, tennis and athletics.
