Jack Lynch was the fourth Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of the Republic of Ireland and served in the post twice, 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. Jack Lynch was born on August 15 1917 and died October 20 1999. The funeral of Jack Lynch was covered live on television as he was awarded a full state funeral. He has been described as the most popular Irish politician since Daniel O’Connell and is looked upon by the people of Cork as a hero. |

The political life of Jack Lynch is too vast to be covered her in full. Lynch was first elected in 1948 and was continuously re-elected until his retirement from politics in 1981. During his two stints in power, he was preceded by Sean Lemass and Liam Cosgrave which he was succeeded by Liam Cosgrave and Charles J Haughey. His profession was as a Barrister and he served for Fianna Fail during his entire electoral career. |

Lynch oversaw one of the most important steps in the political history of Ireland when he oversaw the entry of Ireland into the European Economic Community. Lynch personally saw the whole process through from the referendum needed to the constitution to the eventual entry into the EEC. Ireland officially joined the EE on January 1 1973. |

The Jack Lynch Tunnel was completed in 1999 and today handles 40,000 vehicles every day as they pass under the River Lee. The Tunnel is an important part of the N25 system that forms a ring road around Cork City. The tunnel has been a major success and is a great tribute to the man that was Jack Lynch. |
