Swords: An Introduction

Situated in north County Dublin, Swords is a large suburban town which provides easy access to the city of Dublin although a green belt separates the town of Swords from Dublin City. The population of the town is just over 37,800 and the Irish translation of the name means the Sword of Colm Cille.

The last 15 years have brought about a massive growth in population, a growth which is predicted to continue for another 20 years. One of the major employers and possibly major contributors to the growth of Swords has been Dublin Airport and the spin off services that support the airport.

The massive increases of population in the town have brought about continuous development in the area. The main street of Swords has been refined many times as it has to cater for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. One of the most significant developments to hit the area in recent years was the construction of the Pavillion Shopping Centre. The shopping centre offers a large range of shops and restaurants and is a fitting addition to a town that has grown so much over recent years.

One of the most distinguishing aspects of Swords is Swords Castle which is currently being restored. Legend has it that the body of Brian Boru was brought here after the battle of Clontarf, although recent thought says that the body was brought to Swords Abbey which is located nearby.
